[Mangrove Stay] Interview with the Mangrove Community Advisors

Mangrove Stay

Mangrove Stay is an Urban Co-Stay experience by Mangrove, a new-living community brand.

While you're here, become a Mangrover and dive into the rhythms of a new city and daily life.

Live like a local — stay richly, meaningfully, and with full immersion.

Within our vibrant community, you'll uncover inspiring moments of the coliving lifestyle.

The uniqueness of Mangrove Stay, offered by Mangrove, a new-living community brand, lies not only in its diverse spaces and vibrant community but also in the carefully curated stages of experience it offers.

Through the lively stories of the Community Advisors who oversee the operations and management of the Sinseol and Dongdaemun branches, discover hidden tips and services that will make your day at Mangrove Stay even more satisfying.

You’ll find new inspiration in the flow of your daily life.

Q. All rooms at Mangrove Stay do not have TVs. Is there a special reason for this?

Community Advisor, Hayoung You Mangrove is focused on "Live & Grow,"a mindset that encourages both living fully and growing personally during your stay. We carefully consider how to let our guests experience this core identity of Mangrove from various perspectives.

Instead of a TV in the rooms, we provide a guide with curated experiences that you can enjoy both inside and outside Mangrove. This guide includes book and music recommendations based on different moods, as well as a list of cool and delicious local spots exclusive to the area.

If you're planning to visit Mangrove Stay, we encourage you to come with an open mind and enjoy the wide variety of experiences we've prepared. You’ll find new inspiration in the flow of your daily life.

Q. Even in the smallest amenities, Mangrove's thoughtful approach can be seen. Could you share some examples of sustainable amenities that reflect this?

Hayoung Generally, hotels provide a lot of disposable amenities for convenience, and because of that, we’ve become desensitized to the reality of using items that are discarded after a single use. Mangrove minimizes the use of disposable amenities for the sake of the environment and ourselves. If an item is essential, Mangrove try to use biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives.

Take a closer look at the amenities in our stay rooms, such as the shower curtains and room slippers. You'll find products made from upcycled paraplegic sheets and biodegradable room slippers made from coconut, combining both convenience and sustainability.

I also recommend Mangrove’s solid toothpaste, bamboo toothbrushes, and bamboo tissues, available in the Mangrove store. By purchasing and using these sustainable amenities, I hope you’ll continue to incorporate them into your daily life even after you leave. The more people who resonate with the small changes Mangrove Stay is making, the more we can establish a better lifestyle that benefits both us and the planet.

We recommend not just staying in your room, but also taking full advantage of the communal spaces.

Q. As a stay operated by a coliving house, there must be some differences from a regular hotel. Could you tell us about the unique services that Mangrove Stay offers?

Community Advisor, Seungyeon Yoon The unique aspect of Mangrove Stay that sets it apart from a regular hotel is the opportunity to become a member of the coliving house for a day and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the community with access to a variety of spaces designed for both social and personal use. Just a few steps outside your room, you’ll find an array of communal spaces waiting for you. Many people are intrigued by the fact that they can enjoy these spaces 24/7 at no additional cost.

For business guests, you can work in the work lounge or find the perfect inspiration for your tasks in the library. Mangrove Stay has gained a reputation for being a place where both work and relaxation coexist. Additionally, you can cook your own meals in the communal kitchen, engage in strength training in the Flex Room, or enjoy movies and music privately in the Cinema Room. We recommend not just staying in your room but also taking full advantage of the communal spaces.

Q. There are various activities and spaces to enjoy while staying at Mangrove Stay. If you were to guide us through a day at Mangrove Stay, what would you recommend?

Hayoung First, I highly recommend enjoying the rooftops of Mangrove Sinseol and Dongdaemun. In the late evening, you can enjoy the city lights with a cold beer, and early in the morning, take a warm tea or coffee from the cafe and head up to the rooftop for a peaceful break. Under the city view of Namsan and Bukak Mountain, you’ll experience moments of both emptiness and fulfillment.

Next, I would suggest visiting the library. The Mangrove library is updated quarterly with new curated selections. You’ll find a variety of books in different genres and tastes—there’s even manga. It’s always a pleasant surprise to meet guests who discover the perfect book for themselves and dive into deep reading.

Also, don’t miss visiting the Mangrove Store on the 4th floor of Mangrove Sinseol. You’ll find a range of goods that reflect the brand’s identity, along with carefully selected everyday items. At Mangrove Dongdaemun, on the first floor, you’ll find ‘Cafe Sorrynotsorry,’ which fills the air with the delicious scent of scones. Personally, I recommend the warm ‘Sorrynotsorry Signature,’ which has a smooth taste and is perfect for a light start to the day.

Q. It’s interesting that Mangrove Stay guests can also participate in the exclusive members-only benefit, Mangrove’s wellness program, MSC (Mangrove Social Club).

Seungyeon If I had to pick the most beneficial program for Mangrove members, I’d say it’s MSC. Every month, we host a new program with a unique theme at our home, so it’s a convenient and enjoyable way to expand your lifestyle.

During their stay, guests at Mangrove Stay can enjoy all the benefits of being a Mangrove member, meaning they can also participate in MSC. There are various MSC events to join, such as book talks, movie screenings, and interest-based classes.

You can find MSC updates on the website or the stay reservation page, and you can also book and participate on the day of check-in. If you're considering a future coliving house stay, we recommend checking the MSC schedule in advance before making a reservation to make the most of your stay.

Q. Currently, Mangrove Stay operates in two branches, Sinseol and Dongdaemun. I’m curious about the differences between these two branches, such as the various room types and communal spaces.

Hayoug Mangrove Sinseol is designed to be comfortable and stylish, with room layouts that might even remind you of a hotel. This makes it the perfect place to experience a sense of separation from your daily life. There are a total of 10 room types available, so you can choose a room that suits your stay purpose.

On the other hand, Mangrove Dongdaemun offers rooms identical to those used by actual coliving members. This makes it an ideal location for those considering a "test stay" before moving into a coliving house. Another unique feature of the Dongdaemun branch is the 6-person dormitory, which is exclusive to this branch.

Stay 1904 | KUA Edition @Mangrove SInseol

Stay 201 | COM Edition @Mangrove Dongdaemun

Q. What is the "Edition Room" with a unique number at each branch?

Hayoug I would describe the Edition Rooms as spaces where you can experience the essence of Mangrove in a more vivid way. At Mangrove Sinseol, we have "Stay 1904" and "Stay 1903," and at the Dongdaemun branch, there is "Stay 204."

"Stay 1904" and "Stay 204" are special art stays that embody the identities of KUA and COM, the groups responsible for the overall interior design of Mangrove Sinseol and Dongdaemun. Each room reflects the core essence of the respective branch's interior design, offering a more refined and sensory accommodation experience.

We plan an event that will create a positive connection and relationship between Mangrove and our guests.

Q. Mangrove Stay runs fun events during the holiday seasons, such as Christmas. Could you tell us more about these events?

Hayoug At Mangrove Stay, we host a variety of on-site events. We work hard to come up with fun and unique experiences to offer our guests during their stay.

Last Christmas, we created a "Wish Tree" and placed it in the lobby on the first floor. Thanks to the handwritten wish notes that filled the large tree, we were able to feel the warmth of the holiday season even more. Over 300 wishes were hung on the tree, and many of them were wishes I sincerely hoped would come true.

Mangrove Stay actively engages with guests and plans events that foster a positive connection and relationship between Mangrove and our guests. For example, during Halloween, we held an event where guests could shout "trick or treat!" and receive candy from us.

Q. Both Sinseol and Dongdaemun are neighborhoods where you can feel a lot of local and cultural vibes. Do you have any recommended local restaurants and places for Mangrove Stay guests?

Hayoug Both Sinseol and Dongdaemun, where Mangrove Stay is located, are neighborhoods with a rich history. Sinseol-dong is close to Dongmyo, a vintage flea market area, Hwanghak-dong, and Jegidong, which is famous for traditional herbal medicine. It's a neighborhood where you can easily experience the vibe of the '80s and '90s in Korea. This neighborhood’s character is also reflected in its food scene, with places like 'Eomeoni Daeseongjip,' 'Wagari Pisundae,' and 'Najeongsun Halmae Jjukkumi' near Mangrove Sinseol. These places are not only rich in history but also offer great flavors.

Seungyeon The neighborhood of Gwanghui-dong, where Mangrove Dongdaemun is located, is also very interesting. With the DDP, Jangchung Gymnasium, and the Chungmu Art Center nearby, guests can enjoy a variety of cultural activities and events. At Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, where old and new coexist, you’ll encounter people of various ethnicities and age groups. If you’re interested in trying one of Seoul’s oldest bakeries, ‘Taegeukdang,’ is just a short walk away. It's worth stopping by to try their signature monaka with a rich milk flavor.

I believe that our guests help create Mangrove Stay, so I greet them with even more warmth and excitement whenever they visit.

Q. You must have many memorable stories from meeting guests. If you have any fun behind-the-scenes anecdotes, please share with us.

Hayoug I remember one guest who visited Mangrove Stay for business and experienced our eco-friendly policies. They praised the space, saying it was "a place that aligns with their values, something they couldn’t experience at other hotels." Since that first visit, this guest has been visiting regularly. They keenly observe any changes in the space or new products in the store, and after purchasing and using them, they always provide us with valuable feedback. They also openly mention any inconveniences during their stay, and we are always grateful for their input. I believe that guests like this help shape Mangrove Stay, so I greet them with even more warmth and excitement whenever they visit.

Seungyeon Among our international guests, there was one who photographed every detail of our furniture and space, and even visited the community desk for a personal interview. This guest was an artist visiting Korea to hold a solo exhibition. They visit Mangrove Stay about twice a year and have recommended it to their fellow artists, so various members of the artist community have visited Mangrove Stay. They even sent us a magazine they created. This guest made me feel especially connected to our customers, and they have left a lasting impression on me.

We cheer, thinking, 'Our sincerity is truly resonating.'

Q. As a stay manager, when do you feel the most fulfilled?

Hayoug Mangrove Stay is another service offered by Mangrove, and I feel a sense of fulfillment in being a part of its creation from the beginning. I take great satisfaction in planning and presenting the casual and friendly hospitality that sets Mangrove Stay apart from traditional hotels. It’s rewarding and fun to connect with our guests and create shared understanding. Our team especially views establishing a ‘connection’ with our guests as both an exciting challenge and an important goal. When we see reviews saying, "The staff is so friendly," we cheer, thinking, "Our sincerity is truly resonating."

Of course, it’s not always smooth sailing. Since Mangrove Stay doesn’t have televisions and doesn’t provide disposable amenities, guests who expect the services of a traditional hotel may feel inconvenienced. Complaints do arise. However, when we explain why we don’t have a TV or provide disposable amenities, and describe the efforts we’re making to improve, we often find that guests end up understanding and appreciating our intentions. That’s why, when guests return after accepting these changes, it feels even more rewarding and gratifying.

Mangrove Stay is continuously evolving and growing. We’re always thinking about how we can convey Mangrove’s values to our guests in different locations and ways, and we want to contribute to everyone’s ‘Live & Grow’ experience.
